Frequently asked questions
The Melo app
What is the Melo app?
An app with a private AI. Melo answers on your own device, gets to know you under About you and works without internet. There’s no account, and your questions don’t go to Kamelo. It’s coming to Mac, with Apple’s AI. Read more about the Melo app.
Where do I get the Melo app?
From the App Store on your Mac. It’s free. On Android it will come to Google Play. Only download Melo there: the app never asks for an account, a password or a payment.
Will the Melo app work on my Mac?
It needs a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or newer), macOS 26 or newer, and Apple Intelligence turned on in System Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri. It doesn’t work on an Intel Mac. No Mac that fits? Melo for your browser works in Chrome.
Where are my chats in the Melo app?
Nowhere: the Melo app doesn’t save chats. They’re gone when you close it. Only About you stays, encrypted on your device. You can see what Melo remembers, forget one thing or everything, or switch learning off.
Melo for your browser
What is Melo in my browser?
A private chat in Chrome. It’s answered by the AI built into Chrome, on your own computer: your question isn’t sent anywhere, and nothing is saved: the chat is gone when you close it. When Kamelo notices something personal in ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, like your health or money worries, it offers to move your question to Melo. In Edge and Firefox, Kamelo offers a temporary chat in your own AI instead. You can also open Melo from the popup. Melo Plus (€4.99 a month, incl. VAT, coming soon) adds a stronger AI, help with documents and photos, voice, and saved chats, all on your own computer. Read How Melo works.
How do I add Melo to my browser?
On your computer, click Add Melo to Chrome, Add to Edge or Add to Firefox on kamelo.eu. The store opens: click Add. The Kamelo icon appears in your toolbar; in Chrome it’s behind the puzzle piece, where you can pin it. Then read the welcome guide, or see the four steps.
Will Melo work in my browser?
Melo for your browser uses the AI built into Chrome. It needs Chrome on Windows 10 or 11, macOS 13 or newer, Linux or a Chromebook Plus; a graphics chip with more than 4 GB of video memory, or 16 GB of RAM and 4 CPU cores; and 22 GB of free space, because Chrome downloads its AI once. If your computer can’t run it, Kamelo suggests a temporary chat instead. Check this computer
Does Melo work on my phone or in Safari?
Not yet. The Melo app is coming to Mac first, for Macs with Apple silicon, and then to Android. Melo for your browser is an extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox on a computer (Windows, Mac, Linux or Chromebook). On your phone, you can send yourself the link and open it later on your computer.
Is Melo free?
Yes. The Melo app and Melo for your browser are free, with no account and no ads. Melo Plus (coming soon) adds extras to Melo for €4.99 a month. The extension never asks for your password or card details. Only download it from the Chrome Web Store, Microsoft Edge Add-ons or Firefox Add-ons.
How do I know I have the real extension?
Install it with the buttons on kamelo.eu: they go straight to the official store pages. Want to check an installed copy? Open chrome://extensions (or edge://extensions), turn on Developer mode and look at its ID. In Firefox, open about:debugging#/runtime/this-firefox and look at the Extension ID. The official IDs are:
Chrome Web Store: ijmapnnfbjdkldjljobgadjfoabpgjoj
Microsoft Edge Add-ons: kjjenbhncoomobcdpbhljmhfcmanhbkj
Firefox Add-ons: kamelo@kamelo.eu
These are the only official listings. The extension never asks for an account, a password or a payment. See a different ID, or a copy somewhere else? Let us know at hello@kamelo.eu.
Which AI tools does it work with?
ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Perplexity, Mistral, DeepSeek, Grok, Meta AI and more AI chat sites. Kamelo doesn't run on other websites.
One exception: the Copilot panel built into Edge’s sidebar. It is part of the browser itself, and Microsoft doesn’t let any extension work there. Use Copilot in a normal tab at copilot.microsoft.com instead.
What does Kamelo do?
When you type something personal on an AI chat site, like your health, mental health, sexuality, faith, money worries or legal trouble, about yourself or someone close, a calm notice suggests a better place to ask: a temporary chat in the same AI or, in Chrome, Melo, Kamelo's private chat. General questions don't trigger it.
Does Kamelo still hide names and details?
Not in the free extension. Since version 1.5.0, it focuses on personal questions and Melo. Swapping client names, IBANs and other details for placeholders is part of Kamelo Business. When you update, the old list of masked details is deleted from your device.
Does my data leave my device?
No. The Melo app answers on your own device and has no server. In your browser, Kamelo checks what you type on your own computer, with a word list and, in Chrome, the AI built into the browser. It makes no network requests of its own: no analytics, no tracking, no account. It only stores your settings.
Is Melo open source?
The browser extension is. It’s public on GitHub under the AGPL-3.0 license. You don't have to take our word for what it does: you can read every line, run the tests and compare it with the version in the store. The Melo app isn’t open source: its code isn’t public.
Does Kamelo catch everything?
No, and we'd rather be honest about it. The word list can miss some phrasings, and the notice only appears on AI chat sites. Kamelo doesn't change what you send, and if you're signed in, your AI account still knows who you are.
Is a temporary chat private?
Partly. It stays out of your history and isn't used for training, but the AI company still receives it and can keep it for up to 30 days. Melo goes further: the answer comes from your own computer.
How do I turn Kamelo off?
Click the Kamelo icon in your browser's toolbar and use the On switch in the popup. The popup also opens Melo or starts a temporary chat.
For business
Can our whole office use Kamelo?
Anyone can install the free extension today for personal questions. Kamelo Business masks client data and adds one policy for everyone, set up with Google Admin or Microsoft Intune. It's open for a pilot: start a pilot.
Does Kamelo receive our client data?
No. Kamelo runs in each person's browser and makes no network requests of its own. Client names, IBANs and other details are masked on the computer itself and never reach us.
Has Kamelo been audited?
Not by an outside firm yet. Every change runs through automated tests, and the stores sign every release. The free edition's code is public; Kamelo Business ships its code unminified, so your security team can review it.
Where can our IT team find the security details?
On Security for business: where data is stored, what Kamelo detects, how to roll it out and how to check every claim yourself.
