First release: AI doesn’t need to know everything
Our first release does one thing: it takes the personal details out of what you send to AI, and puts them back in the answer.
Picture this. It’s late, and a letter from your landlord has been on your mind all day. You open ChatGPT, paste the whole thing in and type: “Help me write a calm reply.”
It’s a good use of AI. But look at what you just sent: your landlord’s name, your street address, maybe the account the rent goes to. You didn’t think about it. Most people don’t.
The problem
Every day, people paste emails, letters, contracts and questions about money and health into AI. Most of it contains someone’s name, address or bank details.
So far there were two options. Strip it all out by hand, or stop using AI for the things that matter. Neither works in real life.
What we built
Kamelo is a browser extension that steps in before you hit send. It swaps personal details for placeholders: Sarah Miller becomes [PERSON_1], an email address becomes [EMAIL_1]. The AI only sees the placeholders.
When the answer comes back, Kamelo puts the real details back in, only on your screen. You read a normal reply, with the right names in it.
It all happens on your device. There’s no server and no second AI. Kamelo recognises details with rules: patterns, keyword lists and checksums (a quick sum that tells a real bank or card number from a random one). The link between each placeholder and the real detail sits in a vault in your browser. You can lock it with Touch ID or a password, and old entries are cleaned up after 30 days.
What it means for you
You keep using ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and other AI the way you already do. No new app, no account. Just less of your life, and other people’s, in the chat.
Honest about limits
Your AI account still knows it’s you. Kamelo keeps out the details in your message: the other people you mention, your address, your numbers. It can also miss things, especially unusual names, and files you upload aren’t masked yet. Take a quick look before you send something very sensitive.
AI doesn’t need to know everything. That’s where Kamelo starts.
Since version 1.5.0, masking names and details is part of Kamelo Business. The free extension focuses on Melo, Kamelo’s private chat.
