Security at Kamelo

Melo works on your own device: as an app, soon on Mac, and as an extension in your browser. Here's what each does, what it can't do, and how to check it yourself.

The Melo app

An app that answers on your own device. On a Mac it uses Apple’s AI. Download it only from the App Store (later also Google Play). About the Melo app

AI on your device

On a Mac, Melo uses the AI that Apple Intelligence puts there.

Sends nothing

No server, no account. Your questions don’t go to Kamelo or Apple.

Chats aren’t saved

They’re gone when you close Melo.

About you, encrypted

Readable only with your device’s key. You can forget it all at any time.

The app’s code isn’t public, so you can’t read it the way you can read the extension’s. What you can check: turn off Wi‑Fi, and Melo keeps answering.

Melo for your browser

An extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox. It works on your device, only on AI chat sites.

You typeI've been feeling low for weeks and I can't sleep. Is this depression?
Kamelo suggestsAsk Melo, Kamelo's private chat, on your own computer. Or use a temporary chat.

Built so we can't see your data

Only on AI chat sites

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and others. Nowhere else.

Checked on your device

A word list, plus Chrome's built-in AI if it's already there.

Sends nothing

No requests of its own. No account.

Open source

The free edition, every line public, AGPL-3.0.

What Kamelo reads, and where

On AI chat sites, Kamelo reads what you type in the message box, on your computer. When it looks personal, like health, mental health, sexuality, faith, money worries or legal trouble, a calm notice suggests a better place to ask. Kamelo doesn't change your message and doesn't send it anywhere.

Melo in Chrome: private chat on your own computer

In Chrome, AI built into the browser answers on your own computer. Nothing is sent anywhere or saved: the chat is gone when you close it, and there's no account. In Edge and Firefox, Kamelo offers a temporary chat instead. How Melo works

What Kamelo can't hide

We'd rather tell you plainly.

Your account knows it's you

If you're signed in to an AI, every chat sits under your account, temporary or not.

What you send, the AI gets

Kamelo doesn't change or hide your message. If you send it, the AI company receives it.

Temporary chats are kept up to 30 days

They stay out of your history and training, but AI companies can keep them for up to 30 days for safety.

The word list can miss things

Some phrasings slip through, and the notice only appears on AI chat sites.
